Improved Glucose Intolerance
In studies, Biotin has been shown to normalize and balance blood sugar levels in those who have diabetes. Even more so in those who have blood glucose levels that are not controlled well by prescribed medicines [11][12].It benefits blood glucose because it can facilitate the activity of insulin, which is a crucial hormone needed to bring blood sugar back to a balanced state. As a result, Biotin can normalize and balance blood sugar levels particularly in those who have type 2 diabetes [13][14].
Beneficial during Pregnancy
Due to Biotins influence on cell formation and growth, it supports embryonic growth and can contribute to healthy fetal development. A developing foetus is wholly dependent on the mother for its nutrition. That is why supplementing with Biotin during pregnancy is particularly important as pregnant women are more likely to be Biotin deficient [16][20]. The Journal of Nutrition are continuously studying the effects of Biotin deficiency and birth defects. With several studies suggesting that Biotin deficiencies could contribute to cleft palate, cleft lip and skeletal deformities. [20][21][22]
Prevents Nerve Damage
Biotin is one of the B vitamins that help to replenish myelin sheaths [27]; a protective covering that keep nerves safe from toxins and free radicals in the blood. Without this protection, nerve damage can occur and overtime nerves will die causing nerve related conditions. A major cause of progressive multiple sclerosis is the loss of myelin around nerve fibers [28]. For those with progressive multiple sclerosis, neurological function gradually worsens over time as nerve fibers are damaged.
Several studies have looked at high doses of Biotin for progressive MS, with a pilot study showing a over 90% of participants had clinical improvements after taking Biotin. [26]
